Renovations at Wakefield Union Hotel
The Greater Wakefield Resources Center (GWRC) and Town of Wakefield renovated two floors of the former Union Hotel, now home to GWRC. The Town and GWRC renovated the first floor years ago. The new space allows GWRC to expand its offerings and rent office space to local non-profits or small businesses. Funding comprised several grants, with the majority provided by NBRC.
The Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC), Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP), and Conservation License Plate Program (“Moose Plate”) grant programs provided funding for the restoration of the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Union Hotel. Wakefield and GWRC completed the work in June 2025.
Through these renovations, GWRC can provide a computer room for the community to use, free of charge, enabling them to continue their education online. The computer allows access to Extended Adult Education classes and free online schooling for job searches. The Resource Center will hire for a full-time computer lab tech starting in 2026. GWRC hopes to start the restoration of Pike Hall in early 2026 and by 2027 have plays and ballroom dancing once again.
